STAY GRENADA: Six Senses

How lucky are we? We got to stay at the brand new Six Senses on the very first week of its opening. That is something I almost never dare do, because there are often too many hiccups that first week, too many things that need to be sorted, staff that are still gaining their troubleshooting confidence, things that may break down- basically because it’s the opening, everything that can go wrong, often does. And yet, somehow, that’s not what our experience was like. And definitely not what our memories of our stay were. Let me get into it in a little more detail.

My family and I have been visiting Grenada almost yearly over the past few years, and even when COVID struck, it was the first place we visited once travel restrictions were lifted. We are already in love with the country and we have wanted nothing more than having more amazing places to stay at and to dine at.

The first thing that made me excited about Six Senses was its location, a short drive away from the bustling hub of St. George’s , it allows for a more intimate, slower paced, let’s take it all in kind of experience. Located in St. David’s parish, Six Senses, sits just adjacent to La Sagesse beach. A hidden gem that has captured the hearts of travelers and writers alike. Imagine a crescent-shaped half-mile stretch of gray sand glistening under the brilliant Caribbean sun. The beach is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, creating an idyllic escape. Being off the beaten path, La Sagesse remains uncrowded, allowing you to enjoy its beauty in peace.

So that’s the nature you get, but let’s get down to the hotel itself. It is evident that the goal here was to make sure you truly felt a sense of place, truly felt like you had been whisked off to a secret Caribbean gem. From the specialty tea and drinks on arrival that highlight local fruits and spices, to the room decor that manages to incorporate a Caribbean aesthetic without going overboard or cliched. In fact, it’s the little touches, like the clove and star anise filling up the rooms decorative bowls. Or the floor to ceiling windows that bring in every bit of the vegetation and ocean views into the room.

But more than what they succeeded at with design is the intimate hospitality of the team. I felt very warmly and personally welcomed in every encounter. It is a special gift to have the right amount of attention and the right amount of space.

I did not have a single bad meal, in fact the grilled shrimp while listening to live open air music was something we had to repeat. I do wish for a few more local dishes but we were assured those were going to be added soon. There were indeed a few things missing, but again, it was Day 2, and any thing we mentioned, was immediately rectified and made available the next day.

Last but not least, since we traveled with twin toddlers, another highlight had to be the activities available for children. From babysitting services, to kids club to the ice cream spot. Six Senses cares about families and is putting a massive focus on its Grow With Six Senses program- a way to bring not just the kids into unique curated programming (learning through play, connecting with nature, local culture, sustainability and more), but also to encourage parents to join in the fun and have a fully family centric experience. It was also a super special touch to have a kids tent and playthings set up in their room as well as some cool gear to wear during their stay. In so very many ways, this is definitely one for the books and one to return to.
